The client, a leading Italian distributor of medical equipment, engaged Eoptis and other companies in the co-development of a biomedical solution to support the critical and highly delicate process of patient intubation.
The client needed an innovative endoscopic tool integrating electronics, software, and mechanics that would allow real-time visualization of the oral cavity to effectively guide clinicians during emergency intubation for assisted ventilation. The goal was to simplify an operation that is performed blindly in emergencies or with far more complex instruments in the operating room.
The co-development resulted in a solution featuring a handheld device that allows clinicians to see inside the oral cavity in real time. It is compact and ergonomic, with a simple and intuitive user interface. The distal end features a disposable camera just one cubic millimeter in size integrated into a mechanical assembly together with a fiber‑optic cable to deliver LED illumination inside the oral cavity.
As in many other cases, Eoptis leveraged its interdisciplinary expertise to develop this solution, ranging from optics to the crucial area of software, from mechanics to electronics, while incorporating real-time image processing techniques.
During the co-design process, Eoptis had to comply with highly specific and stringent regulations, producing all required documentation. The tech company worked side by side with two partners, meeting the client’s requirements in terms of design, interface, and beyond, and had to leverage its expertise in optics and image optimization. Eoptis was among the first companies worldwide to use the aforementioned micro‑cameras just one cubic millimeter in size.
